FROM THE DESK OF: CLAIRE CARRILLO

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Find a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” It’s a beautiful aspiration to genuinely enjoy what you do, and even more fulfilling when you cherish the people you work with!

As I dive in for my second year post-grad (eek!), I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on just how far my career has brought me.

Growing up in small-town Clovis, you quickly become familiar with anything and everyone. While I love this hometown feel, I have always been interested in what else is out there. That’s when the world of PR & social media landed in my lap. Oh, what a world! The ever-changing atmosphere, the work mentality, all of it was so enticing. I quickly knew this would be a career I would thrive in.

As I prepare to enter my senior year at Southern Methodist University, it’s great to look back at how my interests have changed, how I’ve grown, and the experiences I’ve had over the last three years. I grew up in Fresno and never ever wanted to leave California, but as soon as I stepped foot on the SMU campus, I absolutely loved it. I’ve always been interested in business, so I entered my Freshman year as an accounting major - and it only took two courses to realize that it wasn’t my thing. LOL, who knew!

Chestnuts are roasting on an open fire. Sleigh bells are jing jing jingling. We’re dashing through the (China Peak) snow. The only snag? Stockings have yet to be hung by the chimney with care. I opted for the safe choice (LOL, so I thought), that would give me a lot of flexibility and different career options, and decided on pre-business.

Okay, so while I may not have a compelling story of wisdom from lessons I’ve learned over a long-standing career in the industry, I have known that I’ve wanted to be in PR since 2012 (as I was eagerly driving the streets of Fresno with my learner’s permit), when ABC’s Scandal premiered. Bear with me. Watching Olivia Pope, crisis manager and “fixer” for political scandals, inspired me - I realized that I could share people’s stories and support something that I really believed in through PR. I was in.

If you asked me one year ago where I would be today, I would never have guessed that I’d be here, writing this post, as the Managing Director at RPM PR. I get to help brands craft their story, have fun while doing it, and be surrounded by encouraging/fun people?  Pinch me. It took me a long while to get here, so I’ll give you a little scoop about my journey. Maybe it will help you with yours.

MR. in PR: Three Tips for Guys in Public Relations

I started out as an intern at RPM this semester and I’m not going to lie, I had my doubts about being part of an all-female team. It’s not like I haven’t worked with women before, and I do consider myself quite a gentleman, but I worried about not being able to relate to my coworkers and possibly feeling unheard. Gender for me is not a big deal - I want to get that out of the way right off the bat - but it is a very different experience to be a male in a female-dominant field.
