From the Desk of: Maddie Felix, RPM PR's Spring 2020 Intern
I have always been very interested in technology and social media (with so many new advancements, it’s amazing to see these new platforms expand!). Growing up, I remember sitting with my aunt at her computer and watching her code websites - where she completely changed the entire look of something. I was fascinated by the clients she was able to connect with online, and had always hoped to have a job that I loved as much as she did.
Throughout high school, I went back and forth between what I really wanted to do, so I started my first year at Fresno State undeclared. I wanted to feel more connected, so I decided to join my sorority, Delta Gamma, and this is where everything changed for me. With the deadline to declare my major quickly approaching, one of my sisters told me about a degree in Media Communications and Journalism – Public Relations.
Honestly, I was super unfamiliar with this major, but I decided to take my first MCJ course to see what it was all about. I was shocked! I remember thinking, “this is perfect, this is what I want to do.” I had never realized that jobs like this even existed, and this is where my passion in this field began. In the past 4 years, I have been at Fresno State, I really began to push myself to get a deeper understanding of what public relations was all about. I’ve learned all about marketing, branding, communication with clients, and the power of the media. I’m not going to lie; it was difficult for me to get out of my comfort zone while still trying to get hands-on experience. Thankfully, I had amazing professors, supportive friends, and a huge family that have encouraged and given me the confidence to be successful.
Fast forward to now, I am currently finishing up my senior year at Fresno State and interning for the #DreamTeam at RPM PR. Although it is just the beginning, I am thrilled to learn from this team of driven women to reach goals towards my future. It’s clear to me that I will learn many valuable skills throughout this experience, and I’m *PUMPED*.
So, as I continue into 2020, I am going to take in all of these opportunities I have been given, and appreciate everything I have worked for. I am feeling extra grateful for the team at RPM for making me feel so welcome, and my friends and family for encouraging me to keep going. The most important thing I have learned is to push yourself, even if it makes you a little bit uncomfortable at first. Unimaginable opportunities can come when you push your limits and step out of your comfort zone!
You’ve got this.
