Fierce Femmes: Jessika Medina of La Dama Salon

It’s no secret that COVID-19 has rocked life as we know it. We couldn’t let Cycle Five of Fierce Femmes go without highlighting some local leading ladies who have persevered throughout the ongoing pandemic, as they navigate these unprecedented times in their industries.  While businesses throughout California have been affected by the rollercoaster of mandated closures, Salon Owner and Hair Stylist Jessika Medina of La Dama Salon has been on a wild ride.

Between her priorities of encouraging a high morale for her stylists, ensuring that rent was paid, and staying in strong communication with her clients, Jessika had her hands full. However, she saw the new additional time at home as an opportunity to build her business and her brand - all with an adorable new baby bump.

Now, all things “new'' are in store for Jessika, as she welcomes the new year with new branding for her business, a new salon location, and a new baby on the way. As a professional in the beauty industry for over 15 years , a dedicated wife, and a loving mama to her son, Sebastian, are you wondering how she does it all? As she shared with us, “I now know the true meaning of ‘It takes a village,’ because I couldn’t do it without my support system.”

Pivoting in ways like offering at-home color kits and curbside product pick-ups have helped Jessika and her team serve their clients.  Jessika has graciously answered some tough questions asked by our team, and we’re excited to share. Read on to learn more about Fierce Femme Jessika Medina, and how she has responded to COVID-19.

Q: You recently rebranded, in the midst of a pandemic. Tell us about that journey and your “why now?” moment.

A: It’s something I have always wanted to do. My first logo was on Microsoft Word and I had a friend convert it to PDF.  We all start somewhere, right?! Within the last four years I have learned so much, and now I realize that investing in marketing and branding is an absolute must. During the first shutdown, I finally had the time to sit down and think of La Dama Salon as a brand. I had never had this kind of time on my hands and I was NOT about to let it go to waste.

Q: With the constant changes happening in your industry, how did you communicate with your clients?

A: This is why social media is so great! Everyone gets to share their ideas and updates. One of the GREAT things that came out of this quarantine is people are now more aware of the need to support local!

Q: What advice can you give as a business owner on how to keep team morale positive during these trying times?

A: Lead by example, 100%. As an owner and leader, we set the tone. I make it a point to stay calm and think of solutions instead of complaining. Of course we all have bad days, but I make a strong effort to never act on emotion or be impulsive.

Q: What did you find most surprising about this year?

A: Although this year might feel like a loss I have learned so many great lessons and I feel that I’m a better person for it.  A lot of good still came out of 2020 and we are still planning for a lot of exciting firsts!

Q: Tell us about the new location, and what this means for La Dama Salon?

A: This is MAJOR! I love my space, I’m now working to make it my own. At the new location I’m able to put thought in every single detail. Guests will really get to see my true vision and personality. I’m also really trying to focus on retail, not just hair products, where I’m able to work with local creators with a like-minded culture.

Q: What advice would you give to other small business owners?

A: Do not get discouraged with the hiccups along the way. You are exactly where you need to be, just keep going!

With Jessika’s new salon location opening this Fall, her dream of the new space and this next chapter in her career is to create a friendly, comforting salon culture not only for clients, but for her “Dama Dolls” as well. As she says, “A happy stylist attracts happy clients.”

And lastly, but certainly not least, when we asked Jessika what it means to her to be a Fierce Femme, she responded with her own definition - “a strong independent woman that works endlessly for what she believes in and doesn’t let the bad seasons in life stop her from reaching her goals.” That sounds pretty on-point in our opinion.

Jessika truly captures what it’s like to be a Fierce Femme. Here’s to you, here’s to “new”!
